An official “Mean Girls” sequel may not be in the works yet, but Amanda Seyfried and Lindsay Lohan wouldn’t mind if it was. “I would kill just to do one week, all of us playing our own roles on ‘Mean Girls‘ on Broadway,” Seyfried, who played Plastics member Karen Smith, said in a Nov. 30 feature in Interview Magazine. “That would be really fun,” Lohan, who starred as central character Cady Heron, replied.
Seyfried added, “Because a ‘Mean Girls 2’ is never going to happen, is it?” to which her former costar said, “I don’t know. I heard something about it being a movie musical and I was like, ‘Oh no. We can’t do that. It has to be the same tone.'” Seyfried agreed, noting that writer and star Tina Fey “is busy” but “she’ll get around to it.”
Neither star addressed the fact that a movie called “Mean Girls 2” did actually premiere in 2011, though it featured an all-new cast, aside from the reappearance of Tim Meadows as Principle Ron Duvall. Regardless of whether another “Mean Girls” sequel ever happens, Seyfried is grateful that the cast has kept in touch over the years. “Listen, we’re all part of each other’s worlds whether we like it or not, and it is really nice to be in contact as adults,” she told Lohan. “Yeah, everyone’s still the same,” Lohan added. “It’s fun to have certain memories that we can’t share with anyone else.”
Back in 2020, Lohan revealed that she’s as nostalgic for the movie as the rest of us. “I think I was hanging on to [‘Mean Girls’] for a really long time,” she said in an interview with David Spade, per Refinery29. “To work with Tina [Fey], and the whole crew again, and [director] Mark Waters. That was really what I wanted. I was excited to do that.” She added that, ultimately, the existence of the sequel was “all in their hands.”
Lohan and Seyfried aren’t the only ones interested in a “Mean Girls” follow-up. In a November appearance on “The Tonight Show,” Lindsay Chabert, who played Gretchen Wieners in the 2004 movie, was enthusiastic about the idea. “Absolutely! I think it would be so much fun to see where these women are now, and if their kids are the new mean girls,” she said. “I would love to know what they’re doing.”
Unfortunately, Fey herself hasn’t expressed interest in doing a sequel, though she did say she regretted not doing one immediately after the first movie came out. “At the time we did want to start the conversation about the sequel, and for whatever reason, I was like, ‘No! We shouldn’t do that!'” she said in a 2014 interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Now I look back and I’m like, ‘Why?’ But now, no — it’s too late.”
Still, she’s continued to participate in the franchise over the years. Fey wrote the book for the “Mean Girls” Broadway musical, and she’s currently working on a movie adaption of the musical with Paramount Pictures. “We’re still relatively early on. We’re looking for a director right now,” she told Variety in 2021. “I’m excited to see who ends up being in the movie.”
In the meantime, fans of “Mean Girls” can at least celebrate the fact that Lohan herself is back onscreen with a starring role in the holiday rom-com “Falling For Christmas” — complete with a cover of “Jingle Bell Rock.”
