Emilia Clarke is taking on the role of Oscar Wilde’s wife in a new movie. Per Variety, Clarke will play Constance Lloyd in “An Ideal Wife,” a movie that follows Lloyd’s tumultuous relationship with Wilde and the dissolution of their marriage.
Clarke, who appeared alongside Henry Golding in “Last Christmas” in 2019, is best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen on “Game of Thrones.” The 36-year-old actor is also set to star in the movie “McCarthy” alongside Michael Shannon, who will play disgraced Senator Joseph McCarthy. She will also appear alongside Olivia Colman in the TV miniseries “Secret Invasion” in 2023.
“An Ideal Wife” is directed by Sophie Hyde, who most recently directed “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” which starred Emma Thompson as a retired schoolteacher who hires a young sex worker named Leo.
Here’s what we know about the movie.
“An Ideal Wife” Plot
The movie will take a closer look at Lloyd’s relationship with English writer Wilde, best known for “The Picture of Dorian Grey” and other classics. The pair shared two kids, Cyril and Vyvyan, whom Lloyd mostly raised herself due to Wilde’s absences. In 1895, Wilde was imprisoned for homosexual acts, and afterward, Lloyd and her children fled to Switzerland and adopted new identities to distance themselves from him. Lloyd went on to become an activist and journalist who advocated for the progressive dress reform movement, fighting for women’s rights to wear more comfortable clothing during the Victorian era.
“An Ideal Wife” Cast
Other than Clarke as Lloyd, the remaining cast has not yet been announced.
