Halloween-lovers, rejoice, because “Hocus Pocus 2” has finally arrived. Fortunately for fans of the original, the movie pays tribute to the original 1993 classic in a number of ways, featuring references to everything from memorable characters to beloved objects like Winifred Sanderson’s famous spell book.
The original “Hocus Pocus” stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, a trio of witches accidentally resurrected in Salem, MA. The sequel picks up 29 years after the ending of the original, with Midler, Parker, and Najimy all reprising their roles, along with Doug Jones as Winifred’s undead ex, Billy Butcherson. Once again, the story begins with a group of youngsters accidentally resurrecting the witches. This time, instead of Dani and Max Dennison, the resurrectors are Becca (Whitney Peak), Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo).
“Hocus Pocus” director Kenny Ortega did not return for the sequel; instead, Anne Fletcher helmed the project. Some fans were initially worried about Ortega’s departure, fearing that the sequel wouldn’t be a worthy successor — but one thing is undeniable: the new “Hocus Pocus 2” is full of tricks and treats meant for old and new fans alike.
“Hocus Pocus 2” is now streaming on Disney+. Ahead, check out some of the witchy Easter eggs from the original scattered throughout.
